How the date of Easter is set
Since the Council of Nicaea in AD 325, Easter has been the Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox. In practice churches use fixed tables rather than astronomy: the equinox is taken as March 21 and the “full moon” comes from a 19-year cycle. That is why Easter can fall as early as March 22 or as late as April 25.
Orthodox Easter
Most Orthodox churches use the same rule but apply it with the old Julian calendar. Orthodox Easter therefore falls on the same Sunday as Western Easter in some years, and one to five weeks later in others. The table above lists both.
The days around Easter
Good Friday is two days before Easter Sunday and Easter Monday is the day after; both are public holidays in the UK, Australia, much of Europe and many other countries. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, 46 days before Easter.
