Planning ahead
Popular restaurants often open bookings for February 14 about a month ahead, and flowers cost the most in the few days before. When Valentine’s Day falls on a weekend, demand spreads over the whole weekend, so earlier booking pays off.
Where the day comes from
February 14 is the feast of Saint Valentine, a Roman martyr of the third century about whom little is known for certain. The link with romantic love first appears in the 14th century, in Geoffrey Chaucer’s poem Parlement of Foules, which mentions birds choosing their mates on Saint Valentine’s Day. Handwritten valentines were common in England by the 18th century, and printed cards took over in the 19th.
